Beep- beep. Beep- beep. Another morning on the island and I had a whole day of riding. But it would also be my last day of riding, as tomorrow I would be going to school with Millie in the morning.
Today’s breakfast was homemade granola with yogurt. I ate and changed into some jodhpurs that Millie had lent to me. Today I would be trying out a track. I wore a polo top, and my hair was in a french braid. This made me look like a really rider! After I’d pulled on my hat and boots, I surveyed my reflection in a mirror. “Looking good Ava” Abbie said laughing, “looking like a real rider, huh?” “Go away” I replied, giving her a playful push. She grinned back. We both hurried into the stable. We were expected to tack up our own horses. I put on the saddle (making sure I put it on the neck so it would slide into a nicer place) and I did up the girth. The bridal was already in place, so I mounted up and waited for Lucy. “Okay girls, today we’ll do doing a small track. It is one we use for novices, like you two. Let’s walk through it.” The track wasn’t too bad. We had to jump two jumps from the paddock and then turn left up a hill, jump three jumps along the top there and turn right back into the paddock. Lucy lead us through the stridings and the gaits. Abbie went first. The jumps were small but She couldn’t quite turn up onto the hill clean enough so she went around the first jump up there, but besides that she was better, and then it was my turn. I kicked with my legs until Shelly was in a canter. Jump one, three steps, jump two. Turn turn turn! And jump, stride, stride, jump, stride, stride, jump. Lean forwards, kick - and fall. The fall wasn’t as bad as I thought. My breathe was knocked from me, but I remembered to roll as I hit the ground. I had a bit of pain in my ankle. I stole up, Lucy walked calmly over. “You turned to early and then learnt forwards too much.” She explained. She walked over to Shelly and held her reins tight. “You okay?” “Yeah, I’m fine. Never been better,” She rolled her eyes and told me to mount up. 2 hours of doing the track and both myself and Lucy had each fallen off a total of 4 times - each. We faced the poles of the first jump for the last time. We were going to race. And we were off! If I just let Shelly run she was faster. I pulled her up into the first jump and then let her stride out thrice and pulled her into the second one. I let in a sharp turn, cutting Abbie off. I lent back as we went up the hill, and pulled myself forward into the jumping position, and let her stride for 2, and up, and 2, and up. I let her go forwards for two more and pulled her round. And Abbie was there. She pulled Moco but she didn’t lean forwards! She meant Moco found it harder going down hill and Shelly over took him. And we won! In the afternoon I headed to Moorland Stable. Moorland Stable was a riding stable for the Bobcat girls. Every year they let in 5 riders to join the stable and the top 2 would be allowed to stay. Of course, they did many other things on a daily basis. Today I would be riding to Firgrove. I would explain all the beautiful views along the way but it would take far too long. At Firgrove most people either worked with the sheep, candle/ soap making or in the mine for coal. Most families did all three. The children had school in the mornings, every morning (apart from Wednesday) and then helped in the mines in the afternoon. The adults worked with the sheep or made soap and candles (wax would be sent up from the hives in Moorland and Crescent Moon Village). There was a stable here too, in fact most people dreamed of going to Moorland or Silverglade Equestrian Centre. A girl called Tan - who now as in the Bobcats. Apparently used to come here to ride and many people wanted to be like her. I sighed. Only Fort Pinta (to explore tomorrow) and then I’d explore Moon Village and Jarlaheim on the way home. I picked up some soap for the Syths and headed back on the horse. I felt very tired and got back to the Syths, ate dinner (pie and jelly) and went to sleep. Jovik school tomorrow.
