A shiver ran through me as I sat in the saddle. It was different from last time I’d been up here as I couldn’t feel my legs. I found myself slipping but Lea caught me.
“Tash, she’ll fall” Lea said, her concern showing clearly. Tasha grabbed a length of some kind of rubbery materiel and wrapped in around the saddle, tying me to it. I felt a lot more stable but I had no idea how to go forward! I voiced this query to Tasha. “I didn’t normally see you kicking Baylis, you just knew.” Well I didn’t know anymore. Tasha passed me a whip and I used it to get him started. I felt bad because I hadn’t given him the chance to do it without the whip so I only gave him a gentle tap. Bay dutifully started forward in a walk. He padded around the arena and surprisingly I didn’t find it hard. Lea fixed on a lead rope before leading us into a trot. On small detail had been over looked. The sitting trot made Bay think we were going for canter and he started up even faster. But Lea slowed him down. Not everything ends in tragedy you know. I lead Bay easily through a course. However, after less than 20 minutes I was too tired to keep sitting up. It took a lot more balance when you couldn’t grip with your legs and my core muscles had become weak. Lea helped me now into my wheelchair before mounting up on Baylis herself and doing some jumping for me to watch. When Mum arrived, Tasha took her into her office. I saw Mum going very red with anger through the window. However, when they emerged she looked happy. We got in the car and she drove us home with no mention of it. Once Lea had gone to do some homework Mum took me out of my chair and lay me on the ground. “What are you doing Mum?” I asked. “Well if you ever want to make it as a rider you’ll need better core strength than that, do a sit up.” I loved Mum so much at that moment! I managed a shameful 6 sit ups before collapsing in a shaky heap. One day I would show those doctors, those people who stare, being in a chair isn’t a wall, it’s a door - you just need to find the right way through! This was a short one, I thought it would last longer but I go where the story takes me and it was asking to be ended here. I would love to hear any further adventures of Maya written by someone else. Feel free to send me any!
