Today I was going to do a monthly favourites but after the event SSO wouldn’t let me back on. Sigh. So today I want to write a short story called the Legend of the Dragon!
It was a time before Jarl, before Aideen, before even Jorvik itself. There was nothing but a volcano sitting alone in the sea. It was a barren place on the outside. Grey, gloomy and isolated. Appearances could be deceiving, for inside were dragons. It was a hive of life. Swooping in and out of rocks, the hatchlings playing in the waterfalls. You could hear a cacophony of calls as the dragons cried to each other in pleasure. The fiery orange lava danced on their rainbow scales, causing the light to scattering all around the walls. Happiness. Pure Happiness. One day, the dragons knew it was time to move on. They could feel the ground trembling in anger that they must fly. Dragons are fire proof, but if the lava was to set into stone they would be trapped. Down in the lowest cavern a mother nursed her child, too far away to hear the calls. The volcano gave one final rumble of warning before there was fire. The lava tumbled over each other in the race to make it down the mountain. It filled all the cracks, flowing into caves and down to the sea where is formed a sludge and started to cool - slowly. The mother looked up to see the lava racing towards her. Protectively she folded her wings around her hatchling. 4 years passed, the mother was frozen in time. The hatchling cried and cried but the mother passed away long ago, still frozen holding up the new cave for her young. The baby had survived on fish that occasionally came in on a spring tide. It wanted to fly again. 2 hundred years later a star fell on Jorvik and a girl on horse back appeared. I think you know the story from there. But the dragon cried on, knowing one day it would fly again…
